Project description

We were appointed in 2018 to convert a derelict chapel in Dartford into a pre-school and nursery facility in Dartford.

The building had sat derelict and abandoned for a period of 20 years and had been subject to arson before being acquired by Gaggle Nursery. Following removal of the asbestos sheeting and pitch fibre soil pipes located within the delelict building by Horizon Environmental, Cravencroft installed a mezzanine structure to the ground floor to form the new first floor.

We removed and rebuilt the existing high level brickwork/stone facework before the installation of the attic trusses to form the second floor. The works created teaching and play space to the ground and first floor areas combined with WC facilities for staff and children; the space formed on the second floor formed an admin facility and kitchen provision.

Once the structural repairs were complete, we set about making the building watertight. Clay machine made tiles were used to complete the roofing work; aluminium windows and doors were installed to the existing openings; the curved window features were retained and formed in aluminium.

Once the building was watertight we carried out the installation of the staircases, wall, floor and ceiling finishes, mechanical and electrical installations, decorations and second fix carpentry works.

Externally, we carried out the external fencing to form the site boundary and form a secure enclosed space for the nursery occupants. Local repairs were carried out to the existing face stonework and brickwork, new foul and surface water drainage installation, paving and remaining hard landscaping.
